The Default Settings Briefing
A default setting is not a governed decision.
The Default Settings Briefing produces the record your DPA assumed someone was keeping.
The Default Settings Briefing
A TLF-certified briefing on the current default behavior of the AI and edtech products in your district. No document exchange required.
Most districts don't need a full audit on day one. They need a fileable record on the vendor that's been bothering them. The Default Settings Briefing produces that record, on the AI and edtech products of your choice, from public sources only.
-
The Default Settings Briefing is a fixed-fee, product report drawn entirely from public sources: the vendor's update blogs about the product, admin help center articles, published DPA exhibits, and current admin console documentation. The TLF Forensic Read methodology is applied to those sources to surface where vendor language obscures, omits, or shifts accountability for student data. No access to your district's contracts. No view of your tenant. No paperwork transfer of any kind.
You name the product. The Language Firm produces the record.
-
A dated PDF Briefing per product, five to six sections each, structured as such:
Product and scope. The product covered, its vendor, the date of analysis, and the public sources reviewed.
Current default behavior. The vendor's AI-related defaults as they are operationally configured for the specified product(s) today, mapped against the most recent admin console documentation and update notices.
Default change timeline. Recent default changes affecting student-facing AI features, dated and sourced to the vendor's own publications. Each entry notes when the change went live, when admin controls became available, and what gap that interval created.
Regulatory anchors. The federal and state regulatory provisions that apply to the defaults identified, with citation. FERPA, COPPA, state AI mandates where relevant, FCC Pilot rules where applicable.
Filing note. A closing page covering filing instructions, internal questions, and a pointer to the District Filing.
A Plus One cross-product pattern note when the order includes two or more products. A signed, dated one-page document identifying defaults that appear across multiple products in the order. Districts use it to brief cabinet, prioritize remediation, and surface the product decisions that are repeating themselves across the stack.
-
Two things before checkout:
The product name(s)
The title and contact information of the district reviewer who will sign the briefing once adapted
That is the entire intake. No DPAs shared. No drives accessed. No documents exchanged.

1 to 3 products | 2 business days | $350
Tier I is the right starting point for districts evaluating one to three products at once.
Common use cases include documenting a recent default change before it becomes an audit question, producing a fileable record on a single concerning product, and authorizing the work at a price point that does not require board action.
-
4 to 6 products | 5 business days | $550
Tier II is the right engagement for districts evaluating four to six products at once, typically a defined cluster that needs the same level of scrutiny applied at the same time.
-
7 to 10 products | 7 business days | $750
Tier III is the largest Briefing engagement available. For districts evaluating beyond ten products, or for districts that need a custom engagement letter before payment, email jcs@thelanguagefirm.org to discuss a scoped arrangement.
